Kirsten practices Emergency Medicine at McGill University's Health Centres in Montreal, Canada. She is also the founder and director of the McGill Humanitarian Studies Initiative (HSI) and a partner in the Humanitarian Training Initiative. Dr. Johnson’s research has focused on genocide, child combatants, sexual gender-based violence and conflict-related mental health and psychosocial support. She is involved in humanitarian professionalization working on the development of competencies for training, education and certification for humanitarian responders globally. She led the McGill University team that worked with S.A.F.E. to incorporate messages about gender-based violence to the peace play, and remains an advisor and partner to S.A.F.E.
