Our Teams

S.A.F.E. employs teams of actors and educators to deliver our performances and education activities, as well as a small core management team. Having three distinct teams connects our work to the communities in which we work as all the performers are from these areas.

SAFE Pwani (Mombasa)

SAFE Pwani was the first S.A.F.E. team, established in 2002 after Nick Reding travelled to Mombasa to help set up an HIV/ AIDS clinic. Pwani means ‘coast’ and this team work in Coast Province and in S.A.F.E.’s main office in Mombasa. Through a wide repetoire of performances, they reach an audience of approximately 80,000 people each year.

SAFE Maa (Loita Hills)

SAFE Maa began in 2007, working with the Maasai community in the Loita Hills. The team uses traditional performances to reach the community of 40,000 each year about HIV/ AIDS, female genital cutting, women’s issues and the environment. Most of the team are young Maasai leaders and their status gives credibility to the work whilst still protecting the integrity of traditional Maasai culture.

SAFE Samburu (Westgate Conservancy)

Inspired by the success of SAFE Maa and their use of traditional Maasai culture, SAFE Samburu are using Samburu song to begin education about HIV/AIDS and to start a discussion on abandonment of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C). As they begin their work in the Westgate conservancy, 100% of girls are being cut, and knowledge of HIV/AIDS is startlingly low.
